International School of Echocardiography in Anesthesia and Critical Care Medicine
Pisa, Italy | 27-29 June, 26-28 September, 2013
This CME course has been designed and organized by Serono Symposia International Foundation
(www.seronosymposia.org) and has been made possible thanks to an educational grant from ESAOTE.
Aim of the course
Cardiovascular syndromes are frequent emergencies in anesthesia and critical care settings, and can have a significant impact on the morbidity and mortality of the patients involved. Prompt recognition of such conditions, with the support of echocardiography performed by well-trained personnel, can help to ensure suitable therapeutic strategies in critically ill patients.
Serono Symposia International Foundation (SSIF) is collaborating with the Cardiothoracic Anesthesia and Intensive Care Unit, Department of Anesthesia and Critical Care Medicine, at the University of Pisa, Italy, in organizing an advanced course entitled "Echocardiography in Anesthesia and Critical Care Medicine", which will introduce participants to the issues surrounding the role of echocardiography in clinical management of critical care situations. The course aims to provide a theoretical and practical basis for the application of echocardiography in the context of anesthesia and critical care medicine, with special emphasis on the issues and challenges of acute cardiovascular syndromes.
The course is divided into theoretical and practical sessions. The theoretical sessions will focus on image formation and the physics of ultrasound, indications and contraindications for trans-esophageal echocardiography (TEE), guidelines for the use of echocardiography, and echo-anatomical correlations on animal hearts in the lab. The practical sessions will provide hands-on experience in patients with coronary artery diseases, aortic valve disease, mitral valve disease, pericardial effusion, or undergoing mechanical ventilation and hemodynamic optimization as a result of acute syndromes in theatre and intensive care unit.
Learning objectives
As a result of attending this course, learners will have up-to-date knowledge of echocardiography in anesthesia and in critical care medicine. Participants will be able to:
- Evaluate the appropriate clinical situations for using echocardiography, including TEE
- Apply TEE in precarious cardiovascular conditions
- Perform accurate echo-assessment of the ventricular function and of heart valves
- Appraise the role of echocardiography in interventional cardiology
- Incorporate ultrasound information into the hemodynamic management of the critically ill patient
Target audience
Anesthesiologists, intensivists and other clinical operators, such as cardiologists, with a specific interest in echocardiography performed in anesthesia and in critical care medicine.
Accreditation
