VET Ultrasound Clinical Solutions - Diagnosis

How do you make the best use of all Esaote’s ultrasound and MRI solutions, in order to reach a better, faster, or more precise diagnosis? Esaote offers several tools that enable the veterinarian to perform diagnostics with greater accuracy and confidence. Examples of these diagnostic tools can be found in the following section.

Needle visibility and biopsy packages for safe and successful diagnostic biopsies

Clinical Need

Everybody working with ultrasound on a regular basis will recognize the fact that ultrasound can be a very sensitive diagnostic tool. Unfortunately, ultrasound is hardly ever specific. When we visualize pathological changes in tissues, we often need histopathology to know for sure what is the underlying cause of the pathological changes. Whether you are taking some fluid out of the bladder, or you want to take a liver biopsy, it is very important that your needle is immediately and clearly visible in your ultrasound image. In this way you can avoid puncturing any tissues or blood vessels that were not meant to be punctured.

Clinical Solution

Esaote has developed several tools to enable the veterinarian to perform save and successful biopsies.

Needle visibility is an Esaote technology that increases needle brightness by combining a dedicated image composition of a standard B-mode with a properly processed and steered image

How does Needle visibility work in practice?

The algorithm allows the user to select a steering angle of 10, 20, 30 or 40 degrees, according to the entry side. The needle insertion has to be as perpendicular as possible to the reference line, which indicates the direction of the steered beam. Thanks to real-time imaging, it is possible to increase the accuracy of the intervention procedure, resulting in a better workflow and improved patient comfort.

Needle guides and biopsy lines

Several Esaote probes are compatible with disposable needle guides, that enable the clinician to perform a puncture under a fixed angle.

How do Needle guides and biopsy lines work in practice?

The needle guide starter kit is reusable and consists of a reusable bracket. The bracket can be cleaned and disinfected. The snap on needle guide is disposable. The needle guide provides a fixed path for the needle. A disposable transducer cover is supplied as well. In this way, sterility of the puncturing procedure is ensured.

Test needle giude

On Esaote ultrasound machines, the veterinarian can select a specific biopsy angle: 20 degrees or 35 degrees. Of course the chosen angle should match the angle of the needle guide. If one has selected the desired angle, two lines will pop up on the ultrasound screen. The veterinarian now places the tissue to be punctured in the alignment of these lines. Once he inserts the needle through the needle guide, the needle will follow the lines on the screen. In this way, the clinician is confident that the right tissue will be punctured.
